Village Happenings
Village Happenings: 04/20/21
Partial repost, there have been a few questions, concerns and lots of misinformation out there:
Potholes: This is the time of year when potholes appear, as the snow melts the cycle of freezing and thawing throughout the Winter exposes our vehicles nemesis. The village DPW will temporarily use what is known as cold patch until the asphalt plants reopen, when that occurs, we will be able to make permanent repairs.
***The village does NOT control RT 17, we call the NYSDOT, and they respond within a day or so after being notified.*****
Village Center Park:
The village has commenced the construction on its Village Center Park with parking project. The contractor, Precise was awarded the bid for the project this last Fall. One side of the park will remain green, undisturbed; it will be beautifully landscaped with meandering pathways, benches, gazebo, information kiosk, modern automatic led lighting all surrounded by a slated wooden fence and freshly planted greenery. The other side will be a municipal lot with 22 premium “very close proximity to the train” spots, there will be dedicated parking on the perimeter for firefighters responding to village emergency calls. The parking lot will be connected to the existing Village Merchant lot on RT 17 next to Characters. A designated Municipal Lot contains a pay per use parking spot from 4am to 5 pm weekdays, the Merchant Lot is a free 2hr parking spot for shopping and dining in the downtown area. All village parking lots are free after 5 pm, Weekends and Holidays, this was done to support our local businesses.
Completion date is set for this July 1st.
New Village Vehicles:
You will soon notice four new village DPW utility vehicles, 1 F250 pickup truck, 3 F550s which consist of 2 dump bodies and 1 platform bed, all are equipped with plows and or salt spreaders, one has been delivered already, these are the work horses of our fleet, they are used during every season for plowing, salt spreading, village generated refuse, brush, tree, grass removal and many other tasks. We lost our nearly 30-year-old snow throwing machine Mid-Season this year, but has been replaced with a modern multipurpose M-7 Trackless machine with a new v-plow and snow thrower attachment. Staying with Trackless allows us to utilize all other currently owned Trackless attachments. Kudos to Superintendent DeMartino for maintaining a fantastic fleet of machines. https://tracklessvehicles.com/
Rockland County Sewer Project:
The county has partnered with the NYS DOT to complete the remaining 126 feet of subsurface sewer pipe from Daters Crossing to Park Ave. The project was suspended due to safety concerns during the winter months but will now resume by March's end. April 20th, the sewer project has restarted. The NYS DOT has also started the northern west side of the sidewalk project, this is part of a NYTAP grant and the NYS Complete Streets project. O&R is also continuing their promised complete gas line installation along RT17, they are heading south from Eagle Valley RD to Sterlingmine RD
Washington Ave Rail Road Crossing:
The village met with representatives from the MTA, NYS DOT, BENESCH (Engineer consultant) to discuss safety improvements to the railroad crossing at RT17 and Washington Ave.
The Memorial Day parade is still a go, Monday May 31st 10 am.
