Sloatsburg: A Great Community

By Isabel Hesse

In some towns, there are awkward situations with people you aren't comfortable interacting with or neighbors you don’t know. Maybe there aren’t enough things to do, and you’re constantly bored. In my two short years of living here, I learned that Sloatsburg has none of these problems, and that’s why Sloatsburg is a great community. Sloatsburg is a great community because there are so many things to do, because it has a very friendly social circle, and finally because of the extraordinary school.

Sloatsburg is a great community because there are so many recreational options for entertainment and family time. Sloatsburg is home to multiple playgrounds, a town pool, a library, and it’s only one step away from Harriman State Park. These offer places for kids to play, for adults to relax, and for quality time with your friends and family. The playgrounds add a lot to the community because that’s where all the kids go to run around and make memories and friends. The pool is important for fitness of all ages and summertime fun. The library is important because kids need to have books for school and summer reading. And Harriman State Park, full of tall oaks and maples, with ferns and mossy rocks covering the ground, is an amazing option for fitness, fresh air, and family time.

Another reason why Sloatsburg is a great community is the very friendly social circle. When people see each other at Hayward’s Deli, they stop to have a conversation about the weather being nice and to tell the story of how their dog ran away. If you’re a new student first coming to Sloatsburg Elementary, everybody will want to meet you and be your friend. They will ask your name and then ask you to cover first base in kickball. If you’re a parent watching your son’s soccer game at the Community Field, you’ll probably run into a neighbor to chat with. Parents and their kids always see each other at the town pool, or maybe at the library. This means that most Sloatsburg residents are familiar with each other and are on a friendly status, which serves for a healthy and cheerful community.

Finally, Sloatsburg is a great community because of the extraordinary school. In just the two years I’ve attended Sloatsburg Elementary, I have built a catapult out of popsicle sticks and rubber bands with Ms. McKiernan. I have played Gym City with Mr. Behrens, scootering around the gym from station to station, buying and selling and earning “money” through tasks. Y yo he explorado muchas culturas con Señora Duke*. Sloatsburg Elementary is the ideal school for students to exercise creative freedom while improving their minds and social skills.

To wrap things up, Sloatsburg is a great place to live for many reasons. The villagers are great neighbors, and they are always friendly. There are so many things to do, so you’ll be entertained all year round. And the elementary school is like no other, with teachers that have their minds set on helping children learn and grow.  My hope is that if you are ever in the area you might pay Sloatsburg a visit and observe all the great aspects of our community.

*And I have explored many cultures with Señora Duke.
